Contact Improv Workshop at the Cultural Center

Friday, April 17 @ 1:30pm
Chicago Cultural Center -- 78 E. Washington St.

Khecari Artistic Directors Julia Rae Antonick and Jonathan Meyer will lead an hour long workshop introducing the fundamentals of contact improvisation for beginners and some juicy ideas to expand upon for experienced practitioners. The workshop will start with honing our skills in weight sharing and physical communication through touch and expand into a lightly structured jam at the end.

***Please wear clothing you can move in freely that don't have any hard accessories attached (belt buckles etc.), we recommend also bringing layers and knee pads if you have them, jewelry should be removed before the class to prevent injuries to others, socks are generally taken off so that you don't slip on the floor and it is preferable to not wear any perfume in case others are sensitive to scents.

Khecari Revives “Orders from the Horse” at The Arts Club

April 8, 2015 at 7:30pm
The Arts Club of Chicago -- 201 E. Ontario St., Chicago, IL 60611

Orders from the Horse
Come see the revival Khecari's Orders from the Horse, a duet investigation by Khecari directors Julia Rae Antonick and Jonathan Meyer.  This work highlights a new, continually developing process exploring the use of surrender in improvisation. Through cycles of repetition and release, a movement palette is developed that utilizes non-conscious choices and low-brain awareness.  This work highlights a continually developing process that will have further life in ongoing performed iterations.

Khecari Audition

Wednesday April 1st, 6 - 9 pm| Revere | 2509 W Irving Park
To reserve your spot email - julia@khecari.org

Khecari Audition

Khecari artistic directors Julia Rae Antonick and Jonathan Meyer are looking for dancers with an interest in our work. We have a somatically grounded approach to dance, a strong interest in improvisation, and a penchant for highly kinetic movement and intricate partnering work, and are looking for dancers with similar interests and experience.

The audition will be structured as a free workshop; we will not be making cuts. While we are seeking dancers for future projects, we do not anticipate making any decisions immediately following this audition. We’re looking to meet and work with a broadened group of dancers, to extend our sense of the capabilities and interests of dancers currently in the field.  Any dancers eventually hired for projects would be paid; we offer $10/hour. If you have been to a previous audition, we encourage you to come back to express interest in working with Khecari.  Dancers are also welcome to come to the audition simply as a free workshop.  See you there!

Please feel free to attend Julia's Adv/Pro Modern Dance Class at Lou Conte on March 6th at 12 pm - 1:45 pm as a preparation towards this audition.

Music by: Joe St. Charles and Sarah Morgan
Architect: Jonathan Meyer
Costumes: Jeff Hancock
Understudies: Sarah Prinz and Sabrina Baranda
Oubliette examines group mind and individual expression within communal confinement.  The work will present four dancers in a five by eight foot pit, with audience above.  The perceptual experience alludes to zoo-goers and juries at trial, juxtaposing physical proximity with the sense of removal fostered by looking down upon denizens of a forced confinement.
Oubliette will premiere in November as an evening-length work with original music created and performed by Sarah Morgan and Joe St.Charles, featuring looped and manipulated accordion, percussion, and vocals.  Created by Jonathan Meyer; dancers are Josh Anderson, Julia Rae Antonick, Maggie Koller, and Chih-Hsien Lin, with understudies Sabrina Baranda and Sarah Prinz.  Costumes are being developed by Jeff Hancock. Now in the early stages of developing a new duet project, Khecari would like to share our rehearsal process, show some of the work we've been developing, and have an open conversation with you about both the process and the material that is arising.
Julia and Jonathan have begun investigations into meditation and possession as tools for movement generation, and the possibility for navigation between conscious and non-conscious states in improvisation.  In tandem with this, Joe is developing a sound score based on the sonic potential of the space and the idea of playing the room.
Jonathan is also exploring the Body-Mind Centering principles yield|push|reach|pull to generate unexpected floorwork and will be showing some triumphs and failures of this method and will be breaking down his process in response to questions from you.

November Sessions

November 2012 | Revere

November Sessions explore how aspects of dance that are considered a successful part of the studio process may be vital parts of a performance as well.  The desire is to frame the work in such a way that failure – moments of boredom, awkwardness, or uncertainty – may be deeply engaging to the viewer.  Audience presence and response are critical to this inquiry into the relative success of failure or failure of success.  Various performances of this work will examine other theatrical elements of dance performance, including sound, lighting, and the presence of a non-performer onstage.  The November Sessions are solo improvisations by Jonathan Meyer with guest appearances by Joe St. Charles and Julia Rae Antonick.

The Clinking, Clanking Lowesleaf & Pales

July 2012 | DCASE Storefront Theater

The Clinking, Clanking Lowesleaf was created and performed by Julia Rae Antonick & Jonathan Meyer, with original music created and performed by Joe St.Charles.  Pales was created by Jonathan Meyer, performed by Julia Rae Antonick, Edson Cabrera, Michel Rodriguez, and Jessie Young, with original music created by Christopher Preissing.

The Clinking

December 2011 | Hamlin Park Fieldhouse

Culling the sweet and the frightening from fairy tale tropes, The Clinking simultaneously obscures and unveils, ranging from fierce to soft, explosive to subtle, admixed with the refinement of tango, the exuberance of swing, the surprise of capoeira, and the precision of Indonesian dance; the themes and issues are presented for visceral rather than cognitive understanding.

Whence

September 2011 | Lacuna Artist Loft Studios

Set in a dusty 15,000 square foot warehouse space, a one-time macaroni factory turned artist loft, Whence invites the audience on a literal and imaginary journey through the columns and crevices of this unique space into an exploration of awkwardness, confession, and fear. A solo dancer, Jonathan Meyer, is accompanied by a sound and vocal score created by Christopher Preissing with over 12 channels of processed field recordings.

Commissura

April 2011 | Fine Arts Building

This work was created by Julia Rae Antonick, supported in part by the Chicago Dancemakers Forum Lab Artist Grant.  Dancers were Julia Rae Antonick, Ben Law, Jessie Marasa, and Jonathan Meyer, with original music composed and performed by Dan Mohr and Joe St.Charles.  Costumes from Katrin Schnabl and lighting by Francesca Bourgault.

Y

March 2011 | Overdier Hall

Embracing choreographic restraint and aesthetic distillation, Y is a deconstruction of individuality.  Populated with fictionalized fragments of hopes, fears, and needs, retrospection is culled and questioned, seeding a dance work that ultimately disdains the autobiography that generated it.  Created and performed by Jonathan Meyer, it is a paean to accidental beauty and the potency of awkwardness, and an examination of his own changing relationship to dance over the last two decades.  Postulating truth as an unwelcome and awkwardly tenacious party-crasher, Y inhabits the liminal realm between memory and fantasy.  Y features original music from composer Christopher Preissing, with manipulated field recordings and a live vocal ensemble.

Tacit

July 2010 | Overdier Hall

Tacit is a series of parallel and overlapping vignettes which expose unspoken agreements through the exploration of duet dance forms and cultural conventions.  Dissecting conventions of the magic show - the audience's willing suspension of disbelief and eagerness to be amazed, the pretense of magic and spectacle on the part of the performer, and the acts of misdirection and unveiling - Tacit features a shifting, multi-faceted world, moving the stage and the audience seating alike.  Tacit is created and performed by Julia Rae Antonick and Jonathan Meyer, joined by dancers Cara Sabin and Marc Macaranas, original music from long-time collaborator Joe St.Charles, costumes from Katrin Schnabl, and lighting from Jacob Snodgrass.

The Waking Room

September 2009 | Co-Prosperity Sphere

This work was created by Jonathan Meyer with the support of the Chicago Dancemakers Forum Lab Artist Grant.  Dancers were Philip Elson, Jonathan Meyer, and Michel Rodriguez, with original music composed and performed by Christopher Preissing, lighting by Julie Ballard, costumes by Iris Bainum-Houle, and kinetic sculpture by Christopher Furman.
